Enhanced Combat Helmet (ECH)

Mission

Enhances ballistic protection beyond the current Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH) while providing stability and comfort without degrading the Soldier’s field of vision and hearing.

Description

The Enhanced Combat Helmet (ECH) is a joint service combat helmet that utilizes recent advancements in ballistic technologies. The ECH is manufactured using ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), replacing the previously used resin-impregnated para-aramids of the ACH. The use of UHMWPE has increased the ballistic and fragmentation protection of the ECH beyond the protection capabilities of the fielded ACH while maintaining a similar weight.

The ECH features a pre-drilled Night Vision Device (NVD) bracket hole to allow integration with fielded NVDs. The ECH includes modular, flame-retardant, moisture-resistant pads that act as a suspension system providing impact protection to the Soldier’s head. The ECH comes equipped with the Improved Retention System (IRS). This provides the Soldier increased fit and stability as well as ease of adjustment due to the IRS’s adjustment slides.

The ECH is fielded with the ballistic “nape pad,” which attaches onto the retention system to the rear of the ECH. The ballistic nape pad provides ballistic and fragmentation protection for the neck between the bottom of the helmet shell and top of the Body Armor collar.
