Family of Weapon Sights Individual (FWS-I)
Mission
Enables Soldiers to acquire and engage targets with small arms and conduct surveillance in daylight or no-light, at night, through obscurants, and under adverse weather conditions, while maintaining boresight of an in-line day optic.
Description
The FWS-I is a lightweight, battery-operated thermal imaging system for reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition mounted on individual weapons. The FWS-I provides thermal imagery including a reticle boresighted to the host weapon (M4, Next Generation Squad Weapons, M249AR) in all battlefield conditions.
The FWS-I, when used in conjunction with an Intra-Soldier Wireless compatible display (Enhanced Night Vision Goggle - Binocular (ENVG-B) or Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS)), provides a wireless Rapid Target Acquisition (RTA) capability. RTA is the ability to spatially align the weapon sight imagery, including reticle, with the user's field of view and overlay it in the ENVG-B or IVAS display.
The FWS-I, when used in conjunction with a day optic, allows the displayed output scene imagery to serve as the input for the day optic.
