Description

The Army Combat Uniform (ACU) consists of a non-flame resistant jacket and trouser made of 50% nylon and 50% cotton. Deploying Soldiers receive a Flame Resistant (FR ACU) variant. To combat insect and tickborne diseases, ACUs are factory treated with permethrin insecticide. The ACU is normally worn with a black beret or a patrol cap in the appropriate camouflage pattern, a moisture-wicking T-shirt, belt and Army combat boots.

The ACU enhances Soldier performance by providing a functional and ergonomic uniform that can be tailored to the mission. Based on Soldier satisfaction surveys, the ACU now includes buttons for the cargo pockets, a reinforced crotch and improved attachment of the infrared tab.

Soldiers wear the ACU with ancillary items. The ACU is machine-washable and contains a wrinkle-free treatment. This decreases out-of-pocket expense to Soldiers for cleaning and starching.

The Army Combat Uniform-Alternate (ACU-A) enhances Soldier performance by providing a functional and ergonomic uniform that can be tailored to the mission. The ACU-A was designed to provide enhanced fit and sizing for female and smaller statured Soldiers.
